Free Golf Lesson!!!!!
Get a grip! Get some balls! Get a life at the Chicago Griffins RFC 2026 Bud Skuba Memorial Tournament and Golf Cart 500 at the Arboretum Golf Club in Buffalo Grove! That’s the free lesson!
The date is Sunday, Aug. 16 and a 2 p.m. shotgun start is planned. Put that in your Google or Apple calendar as a MUST ATTEND. The day is open to all – Griffins old and young, friends of Griffins, friends of friends of Griffins, opponents, family members including in-laws, and the odd, distant relative from the Upper Peninsula. A Meet and Greet will begin at 12:30 p.m.
This event not only kicks off the fall Midwest D1 Premiership league season on Aug. 22, it is also a vital fundraiser for the Chicago Griffins RFC. With costs rising, it is important to add to the treasury to assure the Griffins remain strong in the highly competitive D1 arena. As an example, it now costs $200 for a referee, plus $60 for each assistant referee, travel expenses not included. Even if the Strait of Hormuz is re-opened, those fees won’t go down.
BE A SPONSOR! Help the club make this event a great contribution by sponsoring a hole for $300. Included in the sponsorship is the green fee and a prominent sign at the ordained hole viewed by club members and their guests.
That’s not all. The golf outing will feature raffle prizes ranging from cash to fine spirits to golf accessories. Bring your wallets and some non-fungible cash, please! The price for this memorable day of laughs and good cheer: $125 per person, which includes your round of golf, the cart, and admission to the 19th hole festivities. (The previous newsletter said the cost was $150. The editors regret the error.)

Heavens! We’re Back in 7s!
The Chicago Griffins/ Chicago Rugby Club are returning to 7s play this summer after an absence of a few years.
Head coach Drew Suniula said the team will open the season at the Firehouse 7s tournament at the Blaze rugby grounds Saturday, June 20. The tournament is a qualifier for the Midwest 7s championship games July 25.
The team will hit Milwaukee for the Lakefront 7s the following week in a social match with a trip to St. Louis on July 11 for the Gateway 7s, another qualifier for the championship round.
A social trip to Iowa is contemplated for the Iowa Irish Fest 10s on Aug. 1. Drew said the plan is subject to change, depending on player numbers and team make up.
A Voice from the Past
Old Boy Jimmy Long has reached out to the club from his hideaway in Montana to offer greetings as well as condolences on the passing of Russell Sage.
“Russell was one of my oldest friends. We met in high school (Lake Forest) and played football together for four years. He, along with Donny Elstrom, crazy Steve Dorsey and I, were inseparable. Russell was my good friend and always will be,” Jimmy said. “When I first joined the Griffins circa 1975-76, I later told Russell to join up knowing he would have a blast and would be a natural at it. I think I can say the Club was better off for his contributions.”
Jim joined the Griffins after playing rugby at Northern Illinois University and quickly became a standout forward and founding member of the Loyal Order of Scrum Dogs. He and wife, Sara, have moved to Marion, MT after Jim retired from O’Neill Construction Co. His contact information is available by request at chicagogriffins@gmail.com.
