In its season opener the Griffins-CRC developmental squad edged the South Side Irish 17-14 in a Chicago Cup match played at Gaelic Park on April 4th. The Irish are the reigning Midwest D2 champions and are preparing for the national club championships in May at the Blaze rugby facility.
Griffins head coach Drew Suniula said the match was played in difficult conditions.
“It was a very heavy and muddy game but the level of football from both sides was positive,” Drew said. “Refereeing in CARFU continues to be an issue but we’re grateful for their (referees) contribution to rugby in the Midwest.”
In a curtain raiser to the Chicago Hounds home opener, the Chicago Griffins-CRC will take on the Chicago Lions RFC Sunday, April 12 at Seat Geek Stadium.
Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the play fields adjacent to the stadium. Seat Geek is located at 7000 S. Harlem Ave. in Bridgeview.
The Griffins will field the developmental squad of Condors, Silverbacks and Griffins against the Lions. CRC Head Coach Drew Suniula will be viewing new and veteran players for inclusion in a Griffin side that will meet the Wisconsin Selects April 18 in Madison.
The Lions are the current Midwest D1 champions and will play in the national club championships at the Blaze rugby facility in May. In a Chicago Cup match April 4,, the Lions beat the Chicago Blaze 55-27.
There are Griffins in the Hounds lineup against California Legion. Mark O’Keeffe will start at wing. In reserve are Koby Baker at tighthead prop and Jackson Zabierek at hooker. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
