Sunday, August 16th, at the Arboretum Golf Club in Buffalo Grove. There will be a meet-and-greet at 12:30 for hearty handshakes all around with tee off at 2 p.m. The long range weather forecast looks fabulous.
The cost is $125 per player for 18 holes and cart. And if you really want to help out the club that has helped you out, sponsor a hole for $300. This will include your golf round for the day and a highly visible sign at the hole you sponsor as a good branding and marketing tool that connects you and your business to fellow members and movers and shakers on the fairways.
The Griffins are a 501c charitable organization so a portion of your cost is considered a donation. If you can’t make the date, please consider sponsoring a young or new player.

Bushie On Another Great Adventure
Speaking of the odyssey, our man never quits.
This year, former Griffin head coach Graham “Bush” Muir rode his trusty mountain bike from the southern tip of his native New Zealand to the northern end, a journey of 1,600 miles. The trail wound over mountains and through river valleys and forests.
“I tried to keep it on the backroads,” said Bush. “It was a mix of gravel and some pavement. It took me 19 days.”
He noted that it was difficult to eat enough to keep up his energy, and lost 10 pounds, even though he would eat two or three NZ meat pies a day and order double breakfasts when he could.
The man from Taupo, NZ has battled freezing conditions, howling winds and icy trails in his cycling adventures, which include an endurance ride on the Iditarod Trail and a journey on the Silk Road.
As former head coach of the Chicago Griffins RFC, he led the club to multiple national playoff games in the early 2000s. His gym in Steamboat Springs - Manic Athletic - keeps him busy but he still sets aside time for extreme adventure. Bush rides a custom titanium mountain bike and loads it with his camping gear. He rode alone on the NZ journey except when several friends joined him for a day or two. You can catch his latest video on YouTube:

The Griffins saw Bush last fall at the Ireland-New Zealand match at Soldier Field and we hope to see him again soon. The Griffins wish Bush all the best in his future endeavors.
“I’m trying to figure out what the 2027 adventure will be,” Bush said. “And anyone who wants to come out to Steamboat and ride some bikes is welcome.”
Old Boy Greg Kunkel in Desperate Struggle
Greg “Kunks” Kunkel had his life saved 12 years ago with radical surgery for cancer. But it has crept back and Kunks is currently fighting for his life.
“I was in the hospital for 21 days,” Kunks said in an Instagram message. “I’ve got about eight months left to live.”
Greg is retired from his position at Sunset Ridge Golf Club in Glenview where he was caddiemaster. He has used the position to connect with the famous, such as Michael Jordan and Brian Urlacher and to help Chicago-area kids with jobs and scholarships.
He played for the Griffins in the 1980s as a prop until landing the job at Sunset Ridge, which took up his weekends.
In 2014, Kunks underwent major surgery for bladder and prostate cancer and was featured in a Chicago Tribune story. The cancer has returned and Kunks has been undergoing treatment, but the prognosis is not good.
“The cancer is incurable,” he said.
