Griffins Win on the Road,

Face Forge at Home

Following a true grit performance in Indianapolis last weekend, the Chicago Griffins will face the Pittsburgh Forge RFC Saturday in a Midwest Premiership League home match.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.  at the renowned Red Lobster Stadium, home pitch of the Chicago Rugby Club, located at Montrose and Cumberland avenues in northwest Chicago.  As always, free admission with plenty of free parking and available seating.

Two other Chicago Rugby Club matches are slated that day at RLS.  The Silverbacks and the Westside Condors will play the D3 and D2 teams of the Lincoln Park Rugby Club. SIlverbacks kickoff at 10 a.m. followed by the Condors at 12 noon.

In a Sept. 12 match marked by standout performances from forwards, the Griffins beat the Impalas in Indianapolis, 40-26. Head coach Drew Suniula had high praise for a team that traveled with only one reserve.

“We had a road win with 16 players so it was a character victory and the boys fronted up to the challenges of travel and playing with no substitutions,” Drew said. “The front five absolutely won the game with their effort in the set pieces with all five going the full 80 minutes, showing dominance in the scrum and lineouts and general work around the field.”

The front five included Eric Jones, Brian Flamenco, Tom Muir, Lou DeBerardinis, and Fernando Rivera-Valenzuela. Drew said the Griffins need more support on the road and a full complement of 23 players.

“We can’t keep traveling like this. We need more commitment from the players,” Drew said. “It’s not sustainable.”

The Griffins will have road trips against Detroit Sept. 26 and Pittsburgh Oct. 10.  The Griffins are now 2-1 and tied with Detroit in the Eastern Conference of the Premiership League.
